Module 5: Internship
As already indicated not all students will do an internship. Only
full-time South African full-time students who are selected based on
their performance in the seminars will be eligible for internship.
Selected students will be placed at various institutions of
decentralisation in South Africa. Students will learn the practice of
decentralised government and contribute to the functioning of the
relevant institution. A dedicated mentor will be identified in the
institution and tasked with direct supervision and ensuring a
high-level internship. Students will be required to compile a portfolio
of their outputs during the internship. The portfolio and the
supervisor’s report will be the basis for evaluating the student’s
performance.
The institutions identified for the internships are:
(a) Western Cape
provincial department responsible for local government;
(b) Drakenstein
municipality;
(c) City of Cape Town
and other municipalities; and
(d) South African Local
Government Association (SALGA)
There is no entitlement for students to be paid for their
internship. While host organisations may choose to remunerate their
interns, the Community Law Centre does not encourage, facilitate or
interfere with such arrangements between the host organisation and the
student.
