Gender Information and Outreach
Our experience has shown that a lack of access to information is one
of the biggest stumbling blocks obstructing women in the exercise of
their rights. The Project seeks to address this obstacle through the
dissemination of information on gender equality and women's
rights.
In 2000, the Project completed a comprehensive bibliography on violence
against women, listing all the resources in this area available at
organisations' resource centres in the Western Cape. The Gender Project
is working with the Western Cape Network on Violence Against Women, to
update the bibliography. It will reflect the current collections of
libraries and resource centres, and will be available in 2003.
The Project has produced various plain language information, including
a booklet on
Domestic Violence and a pamphlet on Sex
Work and the Law. The project is working on publishing a plain
language information booklet aimed at empowering counselors at
service-providing NGOs to prepare clients for the criminal trial in
sexual assault cases. Previous and current plain language information
booklets are in the process of being translated into other languages in
addition to English. The Project aims to disseminate information
through its newsletter, GenderNews,
which is sent to a wide range of national and international
organisations.
The Project also frequently participates in workshops around its focus
areas and broader gender related issues, in an effort to disseminate
legal information and empower organisations and individuals to enforce
their rights.
