Background and motivation to "30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku"

The Civil Society Prison Reform Initiative in its efforts to ensure that civil society organisations in South Africa continue to play an important role in prison transformation, will from end April 2007 circulate electronically to its subscribers a free monthly review of media reports focusing on prisons, prisoner rights and related issues. This new CSPRI product will be known as "30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku."

We chose this English, Afrikaans and IsiZulu title "30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku" for a number of reasons. It is firstly reflective of the often-imposed sentence of 30 days imprisonment. It further serves as a reminder to us of how long 30 days are and what can happen in the lives of prisoners during every thirty days of incarceration. Lastly, "30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku" will be circulated every thirty days at month end.

"30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku" will cover domestic and major international media reporting on prison related issues sourced from press reviews, newspapers and websites. CSPRI realises that some of the information may be dated by the time you receive your copy of "30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku", but we hope that it will nevertheless keep our subscribers reminded of current events and serve as a record for future reference.

The first issue of "30 Days/Dae/Izinsuku" will be sent at the end of April and we hope that you will welcome it and look forward to future issues. Please feel free to forward this notice to colleagues and friends who have as yet not subscribed to the CSPRI Newsletter.
