Jill Claassen joined the Community Law Centre in July 2002. In 1995 she started working at the South Africa Constitutional Assembly Database Project, which was hosted by UCT. This searchable database contains public submissions, reports and law during the Government's transition (1992 to 1994). In June 1996, she joined the Truth and Reconciliation Commission co-ordinating the Information Analyst Unit, where human rights violations and amnesty applications were put onto the TRC Database. In October 1997, she moved on to the Parliamentary Monitoring Group, a joint project of Black Sash, Human Rights Committee and IDASA, and remained there until the end of 2000. The PMG website makes available the minutes of the proceedings of South African Parliamentary Committee Meetings. In March 2002, she was tasked to set up a resource centre at UCT's HIV/AIDS Unit.

Jill has completed her BA Degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science at UCT. She has also finished the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (M.C.S.E.) course.

Jill graduated with a MBibl in 2010 at the University of the Western Cape. Her mini thesis topic was entitled: The Establishment of Institutional Repositories at Higher Education Institutions: a case study of the Western Cape Higher Education Institutions.
