Prof. Steytler has been Director of the Community Law Centre since 1994. From 1989 to 1993 he was Professor and Head of Department of Public Law, University of the Western Cape. Before that, from 1989-1990 he was Professor of Law at the University of Natal, Durban and senior Lecturer in Law from 1980-1988 at the same university.
He has been a co-editor of the Local Government Bulletin since 1999. He was a member of the Municipal Demarcation Board, an appointment by the President, for the period of February 2004 to January 2009.
Prof. Steytler was First Vice President of the International Association of Centres for Federal Studies (IACFS) from 2004 -2006 and then 2007-2009. He now serves as the President of IACFS since September 2010.
He has also a “B” rating by National Research Foundation (2010-2014).
Prof. Steytler has authored, co-authored and edited a number of books. Recent publications include:

Prof. Steytler served as a technical advisor to the South African
Constitutional Assembly drafting the 1996 Constitution (1995-6) and as
technical advisor to the Western Cape Provincial Legislature on the
drafting of a provincial constitution (1996-7).
